Why must I use cutting oil or water during drilling?

Friction causes extreme heat. Without cooling fluid, the bit anneals and dulls instantly. Continuous lubrication prevents burning and ensures a 5X lifespan.
Can I use a hand drill on 3mm thick stainless steel?

No. For stainless steel over 1mm thick, a bench drill is mandatory. Hand drill vibrations will easily snap the hard but brittle cobalt bit.
Why did my bit turn red or get dull on the first use?

Burning is usually caused by high RPMs or dry drilling. For hard metals, always use low speeds, firm pressure, and continuous cooling to protect the edge.
